Synod letter to young people: Our sins must not be an obstacle for your trust

Vatican City, Oct 28, 2018 / 06:36 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In a letter read out at the synod closing Mass, bishops wrote to young people “our frailties and sins must not be an obstacle for your trust.”

“Our weaknesses should not deter you,” wrote the synod fathers in a letter published Oct. 28. “The Church is your mother; she does not abandon you.”

Synod document calls for ‘participatory, co-responsible’ Church

Vatican City, Oct 27, 2018 / 05:05 pm (CNA).- The final document of the Synod of Bishop’s fifteenth general session was approved by the members and released late Saturday. While the session was convened to discuss the topics of young people, the faith, and vocational discernment, the concept of “synodality” itself emerged as a key subject in the final text.

 

Youth synod final report released, addresses gender, sexuality

Vatican City, Oct 27, 2018 / 04:38 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The final report of the fifteenth general session of the Synod of Bishops, held on the topics of young people, faith, and vocational discernment, was released Saturday. The document says the Church must find new ways of presenting its teaching on sexuality and continue to “accompany” and “listen to” people with same-sex attraction.

Youth synod final document addresses 'all types of abuse'

Vatican City, Oct 27, 2018 / 04:37 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The prevention of sex abuse and abuse in all its forms is a topic of the 2018 Synod of Bishops’ final document, which says the right formation of educators and youth is a key first step.  

“The Synod reaffirms the firm commitment to the adoption of rigorous prevention measures,” states the final synod document, released in Italian Oct. 27.

After synagogue shooting, Bishop Zubik pleads for prayer, end to anti-Jewish bigotry

Pittsburgh, Pa., Oct 27, 2018 / 12:05 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Multiple people were killed and many others injured at a Pittsburgh synagogue Saturday morning, with the gunman allegedly shouting he wanted all Jews to die. In response, Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh strongly denounced  anti-Jewish bigotry and called for prayer that turns into action.

“May God free us from fear and hatred, and sow peace in our lives, our communities, and in the world,” Bishop Zubik said Oct. 27.

Youth need constancy from the Church, not change, says Irish archbishop

Vatican City, Oct 26, 2018 / 12:00 pm (CNA).- In a world of constant change, young people need the Church to be a source of stability and consistent teaching, a prominent Irish archbishop said Friday.

“Young people are yearning for some kind of stable reference points, some sort of moorings, things they can hold on to, that are not just constantly changing,” Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh, and the Primate of All Ireland, said Oct. 26.

Cardinal Zen: The Vatican is badly mishandling China situation

Hong Kong, China, Oct 26, 2018 / 12:00 am (CNA).- The recent agreement between the Vatican and China is a step towards the “annihilation” of the Catholic Church in China, Cardinal Joseph Zen, former bishop of Hong Kong, wrote in a New York Times op-ed published on Wednesday.

Zen, who has been openly critical of Vatican’s approach towards China in the past, did not hold back in his assessment of Pope Francis’ new deal and in offering his views on communist governments.
