Mother Clelia Merloni, ‘a woman of pardon,’ to be beatified

Vatican City, Nov 2, 2018 / 05:00 pm (CNA).- Mother Clelia Merloni, a 20th-century Italian religious sister and founder of the women’s institute of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, will be beatified in Rome on Saturday.

With her beatification at the Basilica of St. John Lateran Nov. 3, “the Church is recognizing this great woman, a woman of faith, a woman of courage and humility, and especially a woman of pardon,” Sr. Anne Walsh, vicar general of the Apostles, told CNA.

Pope on All Saints' Day: Live for heaven, not the world

Vatican City, Nov 1, 2018 / 07:44 am (CNA/EWTN News).- If a Christian wants to reach heaven, he or she should ask themselves if they are living for the pleasures of the world, or if they are striving after holiness with all their strength, Pope Francis said on the feast of All Saints.

“Let us ask ourselves what side we are on: that of heaven or that of the earth? Do we live for the Lord or for ourselves, for eternal happiness or for some fulfillment now?” the pope said Nov. 1.

Renovation at Vatican embassy in Rome uncovers human remains

Vatican City, Oct 31, 2018 / 05:37 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Human bone fragments have been discovered during the renovation of a building connected to the Holy See’s apostolic nunciature in Rome, the Vatican said late Tuesday.

Rome’s chief prosecutor, Giuseppe Pignatone, has called for a forensic examination of the remains to determine age, sex, and date of death. It is yet unknown if they belong to one or more people.

Pope Francis calls faithful married love 'revolutionary'

Vatican City, Oct 31, 2018 / 04:48 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Faithful married love, in which a husband loves his wife like Christ loves the Church, is “revolutionary,” Pope Francis said Wednesday.

The pope focused his remarks at the general audience on spousal fidelity in every vocation.

“A call to love … manifests itself in fidelity,” Pope Francis said Oct. 31 in St. Peter’s Square.

Without Christ, Church's mission is just 'social activism' pope says

Vatican City, Oct 29, 2018 / 02:32 pm (CNA).- If one’s work as a Catholic is not united to Christ Jesus, it is no longer the “mission” to which the Church is called, Pope Francis told a group of religious brothers Monday.

 

“Let us not forget that the condition of every mission in the Church is that we are united to the Risen Christ as branches to the vine. Otherwise what we do is social activism,” the pope said Oct. 29.

 

Synod 2018's final document shows nuances on 'synodality'

Vatican City, Oct 29, 2018 / 12:14 pm (CNA).- Among the most debated paragraphs of the final document from the Synod of Bishops on young people, faith, and vocational discernment were those pertaining to the concept of synodality.

Although all paragraphs on the matter, namely, n. 119 to 125, got a majority of affirmative votes, the paragraphs also received a relatively high number of “no” votes, showing that bishops agreed less on that issue than on others in the document.

Pope Francis ends synod, calls final document ‘work of the Holy Spirit’

Vatican City, Oct 28, 2018 / 11:00 am (CNA).- Pope Francis closed the 2018 Synod of Bishops Oct. 27, calling the meeting’s final document the work of the Holy Spirit.

 

The 167 paragraph text on young people, the faith, and vocational discernment was voted on paragraph by paragraph Saturday, following nearly a month of discussion on the topic.

 

Pope Francis prays for victims of synagogue shooting

Vatican City, Oct 28, 2018 / 07:53 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis offered prayers for the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in his Angelus address Sunday.

“May the The Most High welcome the dead in his peace, comfort their families and support the wounded,” Pope Francis said Oct. 28.

Eleven people were killed when a gunman opened fire at the Tree of Life synagogue Saturday morning during its Sabbath service.
