Vatican reinforces financial cooperation with US

Vatican City, Jul 5, 2014 / 10:26 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Financial Intelligence Authority, the Vatican’s financial watchdog, has agreed to exchange information with the U.S. government, significantly strengthening international cooperation on financial concerns.
 
René Bruelhart, director of the financial authority, said the agreement is “a further step in Holy See efforts towards perfecting a system of financial regulation and part of our commitment to transparency and international cooperation.”

Pope: service to others frees us from 'existential grayness'

Vatican City, Jul 5, 2014 / 07:20 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In his homily during Mass for Saturday’s trip to Molise, Pope Francis explained that the Church is a people that both serves God and lives in the freedom that he gives from oppression.

“This is the freedom that, by the grace of God, we experience in the Christian community when we put ourselves at each others' service, without jealousy, without taking sides, without chatter… Serving one another. Serving!” the Pope explained in his July 5 homily.

Pope Francis names new bishop to Fall River diocese

Vatican City, Jul 3, 2014 / 07:39 am (CNA/EWTN News).- It was announced by the Vatican earlier today that Pope Francis has tapped Bishop Edgar Moreira da Cunha, S.D.V., auxiliary for Newark, N.J., to lead the diocese of Fall River, Mass.

“Today, with a mixture of great joy and sadness, I congratulate Bishop Edgar da Cunha on his appointment as Bishop of Fall River,” Archbishop John J. Myers of Newark said in a July 3 statement.

Catholic aid organizations scramble to meet Iraqi needs

Vatican City, Jul 3, 2014 / 04:56 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In a tumultuous Iraq facing an increasingly uncertain future, Catholic charity organizations are rallying to meet the immediate needs of those afflicted by ongoing violence.

“Movement is pretty limited, so all numbers and information we get is anecdotal,” Kris Ozar, correspondent for Caritas Egypt, an international relief agency of the Church, told CNA June 30.
