Indian bishop-elect aims to show God's love to new flock

Vatican City, Jul 10, 2014 / 08:04 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Fr. Theodore Mascarenhas, who was appointed Wednesday to be an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Ranchi in India's eastern state of Jharkhand, has voiced his enthusiasm for the task.

“I would like to be what Pope Francis asks us to be: a pastor who feels the smell of the sheep, who has the sheep close to him,” Fr. Mascarenhas told CNA July 10, the day following his appointment, expressing his desire to follow in the Pope’s pastoral footsteps.

Vatican backs a 'Pause for Peace' during World Cup final

Vatican City, Jul 10, 2014 / 11:53 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Pontifical Council for Culture launched an effort designed to unite the world in asking for peace in warring countries by observing a moment of silence during the final game of the World Cup.

“Sports were born around religious festivities. Sporting events were moments of peace when wars ceased, as for the Olympic truce,” Msgr. Melchor Sanchez de Toca y Alameda said July 10 for the launch of the campaign.

Pope Francis to visit evangelical pastor from Buenos Aires

Vatican City, Jul 10, 2014 / 07:29 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Vatican announced earlier today that Pope Francis has decided to pay a private visit to an evangelical pastor who is a close friend from his time in Buenos Aires, but currently lives in Italy.

On the morning of July 26, a Saturday, the Roman Pontiff will travel to the province of Caserta in the Campania region of Italy for a casual visit with pastor Giovanni Traettino.

Church leaders in Holy Land call for an end to violent cycle

Vatican City, Jul 9, 2014 / 02:15 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- In a declaration issued by the Catholic Ordinaries in the Holy Land, Church leaders decried ongoing violence in the region, criticizing leaders’ closed-mindedness, and calling for peaceful negotiations.

“A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more,” the July 8 declaration opened, quoting the prophet Jeremiah.

Holy See announces new economic, communications framework

Vatican City, Jul 9, 2014 / 11:04 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Vatican announced Wednesday major changes to both its economic and communications frameworks, including an increased role for the Secretariat for the Economy.

Also announced were the appointment of a new president for the 'Vatican bank' , a committee to study the Vatican's pension system, and a new committee for Vatican communications.

Korean celebrities create music video ahead of Pope's visit

Vatican City, Jul 8, 2014 / 11:07 am (CNA/EWTN News).- More than 20 Korean celebrities have come together in making a music video honoring Pope Francis’ upcoming visit, and is an initiative they hope will help to overcome religious differences.

“I thought that if we united in praying for others (through this song), it would be the most beautiful flower bouquet that we could give to the pope when he arrives,” actor Ahn Sung-ki, who organized the event, stated in a July 7 news conference releasing the video.

Calabrian police take stand against mafia following Pope's visit

Vatican City, Jul 8, 2014 / 08:35 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Two weeks after Pope Francis’ harsh condemnation of mafia corruption in the Italian region of Calabria, police abandoned a Marian procession which paused to bow in front of the house of a mafia leader.

According to Italian news agency ANSA, anti-mafia activists in southern Calabria have officially opened an investigation regarding a July 2 procession in the town of Oppido Mamertina carrying a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Pope Francis begs forgiveness from clergy abuse victims

Vatican City, Jul 7, 2014 / 11:08 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis, in his first Vatican meeting with sex abuse victims, asked forgiveness for the Church’s sins of omissions in sex abuse scandals and denounced sex abuse by clergy as “execrable acts.”
 
The meeting took place July 7 at the Pope’s Casa Santa Marta residence. Six sex abuse victims attended: three men and three women. Two were Irish, two were British and two were German.
