Pandemic could take heaviest toll on homeless, says pope

Vatican City, Apr 27, 2020 / 06:00 am (CNA).- The homeless “risk paying the heaviest price” amid the coronavirus crisis, Pope Francis has said in a message to street newspapers.

In a statement dated April 21 but released by the Holy See press office April 27, the pope noted that the pandemic posed a dire threat to the more than 100 publications sold by the homeless worldwide.

Thousands of people depend for their livelihoods on the sale of street newspapers, he said. 

Pope thanks artists for showing ‘path of beauty’ during pandemic

Vatican City, Apr 27, 2020 / 05:00 am (CNA).- As much of the world remains under quarantine due to the coronavirus, Pope Francis prayed for artists who show others “the path of beauty” amid lockdown restrictions. 

“We pray today for artists, who have this very great capacity for creativity … May the Lord give us all the grace of creativity right now,” Pope Francis said April 27 before his morning Mass.

“Contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial,” Pope Francis said in a letter April 25.

You must live the faith to share it well, Pope Francis says

Vatican City, Apr 25, 2020 / 05:10 am (CNA).- To say you are a Christian while not living like one does not show people the real treasure of the faith – which we have the obligation to share, Pope Francis said at Mass April 25.

“Faith is either missionary or it is not faith,” the pope said April 25. “If I say that I am a Christian and I live like a pagan, it does not work! This convinces no one.”

Pope Francis donates ventilators in honor of St. George’s feast day

Vatican City, Apr 23, 2020 / 08:45 am (CNA).- Pope Francis marked the feast of his namesake on Thursday with a gift of ventilators and other medical equipment to countries with medical systems overwhelmed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Ventilators were delivered to hospitals in Romania, Spain, and Italy on April 23, the feast of St. George, the patron saint of Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
