Pope Francis: The Church cannot be silent about economic suffering

Vatican City, Apr 12, 2018 / 08:21 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In the preface to a book on his economic thought, Pope Francis has written that the Gospel is not an unattainable ideal, but something that the whole Church should seek, especially where there is economic injustice.

“The Church, in spreading the message of charity and justice of the Gospel, cannot remain silent in the face of injustice and suffering,” the pope wrote.

Papal commission asks Francis for synod on the role of women in the Church

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2018 / 12:48 pm (CNA).- The Pontifical Commission for Latin America has proposed that Pope Francis convoke a synod on the role of women in the life and mission of the Church.
 
The proposal is contained in a 15-paragraph statement approved by the Pontifical Commission for Latin America’s plenary assembly one month ago, and published April 11 in L’Osservatore Romano.

Children should be baptized in the faith, Pope Francis says

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2018 / 07:43 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis spoke about the sacrament of Baptism on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of the Catholic practice of baptizing infants, since the grace of the Holy Spirit helps them to grow in virtue.

“Why baptize a child who does not understand?” the pope asked April 11. “When we baptize a child, the Holy Spirit enters that child, and the Holy Spirit makes... the Christian virtues grow inthat child, who will then flourish.”

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2018 / 12:00 am (CNA).- The new president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts is a well-respected canon law expert, with pastoral, scholarly, and curial experience.

On April 7, Archbishop Filippo Iannone was appointed president of the Vatican dicastery charged with overseeing the interpretation of canon law and providing canonical guidance to other Vatican offices. Iannone, only 60, has served in the dicastery as an adjunct secretary since Nov. 11, 2017.

Pope to visit Marian shrine, attend Neocatechumenal Way meeting in May

Vatican City, Apr 10, 2018 / 11:18 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Tuesday papal spokesperson Greg Burke announced two new additions to Pope Francis’ May calendar: A visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Love in Rome and a meeting with members of the Neocatechumenal Way.

Francis’ visit to the Shrine of Divine Love will take place the afternoon of May 1. There, the pope will pray the rosary to mark the beginning of May, the month of Mary.

Pope Francis: We experience God's mercy before we share it

“We must always start from this fixed point: God treated me with mercy,” the pope said April 10. “This is the key to becoming God’s collaborators. One experiences mercy and turns into [a] minister of mercy.”
