Iraqi patriarch to Pope Francis: Chaldean Church is 'a church of martyrs'

Vatican City, Aug 6, 2019 / 08:40 am (CNA).- The Chaldean Catholic Church is a Church of martyrs, Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako of Babylon told Pope Francis this week.

“Our Chaldean church, since the early centuries, was a missionary church which announced the gospel reaching as far as China, and gave so many martyrs and continues to give today,” Sako wrote in an Aug. 4 letter to the pope.

“It has always been a church of martyrs throughout its history.”

Benedict XVI invited Monsignor Livio Melina to meet with him in on Aug. 1, a source close to Melina told CNA.

Pope Francis prays for victims of shootings in U.S.

Vatican City, Aug 4, 2019 / 04:35 am (CNA).- Pope Francis Sunday remembered the victims, and the families of the victims, of recent shootings in Texas, California, and Ohio, asking for prayers.

“I am spiritually close to the victims of the episodes of violence that these days have bloodied Texas, California and Ohio, in the United States, affecting defenseless people,” the pope said Aug. 4, after the recitation of the Angelus.

Pope Francis to scouts: True joy comes from God's love, not things

Jesus “gives you what no thing can give you; because the latest smartphone, the fastest car or the fashionable dress, besides never being enough, will never give you the joy of feeling loved and also the joy of loving,” the pope said Aug. 3.

Pope Francis surprises ill religious sister with visit

Vatican City, Jul 31, 2019 / 05:46 am (CNA).- Pope Francis took advantage of his lighter summer schedule to make a surprise visit to a convalescing Daughter of Charity earlier this week.

Sr. Maria Mucci, 74, has spent her entire religious life serving guests and Pope Francis in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. Since undergoing a surgery in October, she has been recovering in the infirmary at her congregation’s provincial house in Rome.
