Pope Francis condemns euthanasia as utilitarianism, not freedom

Vatican City, Sep 2, 2019 / 07:13 am (CNA).- Euthanasia is a way of treating the human person as an object; while it may appear to give freedom, it is really a rejection of hope, Pope Francis told an oncology association Sept. 2.

“The practice of euthanasia, which has already been legalized in several countries, only apparently aims to encourage personal freedom,” he said Sept. 2.

Do not act with tyranny towards God's creation, Pope Francis says

Vatican City, Sep 1, 2019 / 12:00 pm (CNA).- In a message for Sunday’s World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation, Pope Francis encouraged Catholics to make simple changes to their lives so that God’s creation is treated with respect.

“Too many of us act like tyrants with regard to creation. Let us make an effort to change and to adopt more simple and respectful lifestyles!” he said in the Sept. 1 message.

Elevator malfunction leaves pope stuck before Angelus

Vatican City, Sep 1, 2019 / 06:34 am (CNA).- Pope Francis begged the pardon of the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square Sunday, explaining that he was late because he had gotten stuck in a Vatican elevator and had to wait for help from the fire department.

“First of all, I have to apologize for the delay, but there was an accident: I was locked in the elevator for 25 minutes!” the pope said Sept. 1, after arriving seven minutes late for the noon Angelus and reflection.

Pope Francis to create 13 new cardinals in October consistory

Vatican City, Sep 1, 2019 / 05:12 am (CNA).- Pope Francis announced Sunday he will create 13 new cardinals, from every part of the world, in a consistory Oct. 5. Among them are 10 who are elegible to vote in a future conclave.

Coming from North America, Central America, Africa, Europe, and Asia, Pope Francis said Sept. 1 that "their origin expresses the missionary vocation of the Church, which continues to proclaim the merciful love of God to all people on earth."

Former Vatican communications chief named vice chancellor of Pontifical Academy of Sciences

Vatican City, Aug 31, 2019 / 05:29 am (CNA).- Pope Francis has named Msgr. Dario Edoardo Vigano, former head of Vatican communications, to a new position of vice chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.

Dario Vigano, 57, has been serving as an advisor to the Vatican communications department since March 2018, when he stepped down as prefect of what was then the Secretariat for Communications.

Pope Francis will visit this Catholic-run HIV treatment center in Mozambique

Vatican City, Aug 30, 2019 / 09:38 am (CNA).- Days ahead of his trip to three Eastern African nations, Pope Francis sent a video message to the people of Mozambique, saying his heart embraces them.

Part of Francis’ visit to the country’s capital city of Maputo Sept. 5-6 will be a stop at the Zimpeto DREAM center, a medical clinic run by the Community of Sant’Egidio, a lay Catholic movement centered on peace and helping the poor.

Obeying God key to Christian life, Pope Francis says

Vatican City, Aug 28, 2019 / 04:39 am (CNA).- An important aspect of the Christian life is obeying God even when there may be consequences for going against the commands of others, Pope Francis said during the general audience Wednesday.

In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter offers “a key to the Christian life: ‘To obey God instead of men,’” the pope said Aug. 28, adding that “it is the great Christian response.”

First Chinese bishop consecrated after Vatican-China deal

Vatican City, Aug 27, 2019 / 10:44 am (CNA).- A new bishop was consecrated Monday in Inner Mongolia, China, according to Asia News. Bishop Antonio Yao Shun is the first bishop to be consecrated in the country after a deal on bishop appointments was made with the Vatican last year.

Beijing and Vatican officials signed a provisional agreement on bishop appointments Sept. 22, 2018. The Vatican-China deal was intended to unify the underground Church and the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association.
