Pope Francis: Don't 'overdramatize' your complaints to God

Vatican City, Sep 30, 2014 / 09:13 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In his homily on Tuesday Pope Francis said “complaining” to God in times of suffering can be a prayer, but cautioned not to exaggerate our difficulties in front of those undergoing major tragedies.

“Our life is too easy, our complaints are overdramatized,” the pontiff told those in the Vatican’s Saint Martha house in his Sept. 30 daily Mass.

Synod at heart of papal liturgies for month of October

Vatican City, Sep 30, 2014 / 05:00 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The schedule of liturgical celebrations over which Pope Francis will preside in October is mainly booked with events surrounding the synod of bishops, which culminates with the beatification of Pope Paul VI.

According to the schedule released by the Vatican on Sept. 26, Pope Francis will begin the month of October by kicking off the highly anticipated synod of bishops on the family with an Oct. 4 prayer vigil to be held in St. Peter’s Square at 6p.m. local time.

First woman appointed to a Vatican congregation joyful

Vatican City, Sep 30, 2014 / 02:04 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The first woman ever to be appointed a member of a Vatican congregation explains that “women still have much to give to the Church with their personal charisma.”

Sr. Luzia Premoli, superior general of the Combonian Missionary Sisters, was appointed a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on Sept. 13, and spoke recently to CNA.

Family will be center of next World Communications Day

Vatican City, Sep 29, 2014 / 04:02 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- World Communications Day 2015 will focus on the theme “Communicating the Family: A Privileged Place of Encounter with the Gift of Love,” the Vatican announced Monday.

According to the Sept. 29 release, the theme is in continuity with 2014's message, “Communication at the service of an authentic culture of encounter”, as well as with the theme of the forthcoming Synods on the Family.

The role of angels: one author's push to shed light on the afterlife

Vatican City, Sep 29, 2014 / 01:58 pm (CNA).- In an effort to show what Scripture tells us about “the beyond,” often obscured by a society that leans toward darkness, Fr. Mark Haydu has published a new book exploring the depiction of angels in art.

“There is a fascination in the world with the spiritual and the occult and the mysterious after death. We see it with vampires, we see it in popular books and television shows, etc.,” Fr. Haydu told CNA Sept. 29, the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

Pope Francis: Satan seduces by disguising evil as good

“He presents things as if they were good, but his intention is destruction. And the angels defend us,” the Roman Pontiff told those gathered for his Sept. 29 mass in the Vatican’s Saint Martha residence.

UK bishop steps down over 'being unfaithful' to vows

Vatican City, Sep 28, 2014 / 10:59 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Bishop Kieran Conry of the U.K. dioceses of Arundel and Brighton has announced his resignation after revealing he has been “unfaithful” to his “promises as a Catholic priest.”

“I am sorry for the shame that I have brought on the diocese and the Church and I ask for your prayers and forgiveness,” he said in a brief statement, which has been read in all the Church's of the dioceses over the weekend.

Pope Francis calls Benedict XVI the ultimate 'grandfather'

Vatican City, Sep 28, 2014 / 10:10 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Retired pontiff Benedict XVI joined some 50,000 pilgrims in Saint Peter's Square on Sunday, Sept. 28 for a meeting between Pope Francis and elderly people from around the world.

Welcoming his predecessor, the Holy Father described Pope Benedict as the “grandfather of all grandfathers.”

“I have said many times that it gives me great pleasure that he lives here in the Vatican, because it is like having a wise grandfather at home. Thank you!”

Future depends on encounter between young and old, Pope says

Vatican City, Sep 28, 2014 / 09:27 am (CNA/EWTN News).- There is no future without the encounter between generations, Pope Francis said –  addressing the tens of thousands of grandparents and elderly men and women gathered for Mass in Saint Peter's Square.

The Sept. 28 Mass followed an international encounter with the Holy Father and the elderly earlier in the morning.
