Pell: Church’s mission ‘no justification’ for financial inefficiency or corruption

Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Jun 30, 2020 / 11:30 am (CNA).- Cardinal George Pell has said that the Church’s spiritual mission is no excuse for bad management, and that financial corruption can pose a greater risk to clergy than sexual misconduct.

“Undoubtedly, money is one of God’s gifts, it is also a source of temptation,” Pell said in a video message delivered Tuesday evening to the Global Institute of Church Management at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome.

Pope Francis urges Catholic media to help young tell good from evil

Vatican City, Jun 30, 2020 / 07:10 am (CNA).- The world needs media that can help young people to distinguish between good and evil, presenting the facts in a “clear and unbiased” way, Pope Francis said Tuesday.

In a June 30 message to members of the Catholic Press Association, the pope appealed to Catholic journalists to help break down barriers of misunderstanding between people. 

Documents seized from office managing St. Peter's as Pope Francis appoints commissioner

Vatican City, Jun 30, 2020 / 04:35 am (CNA).- Pope Francis has appointed a commissioner to reform the administration of the office responsible for the upkeep of St. Peter’s Basilica, where documents and computers were seized by order of judicial authorities June 30.

The decision to appoint a commissioner was made following a report by the Vatican’s auditor general, which is responsible for monitoring offices of the Roman Curia and Vatican City State for financial corruption.

Mincione companies file suit against Vatican Secretariat of State and property holding company

Newsroom, Jun 29, 2020 / 11:00 am (CNA).- Companies owned by Italian businessman Raffaele Mincione have filed lawsuits against the holding company which owns the London building at the center of a multi-million-dollar real estate investment by the Holy See, and against the Vatican Secretariat of State. Both suits were filed with the High Court of England and Wales in London, which is the court of first instance for high value civil cases.

Pope Francis on feast of Saints Peter and Paul: 'Only prayer unlocks chains'

“What would happen if we prayed more and complained less?” Pope Francis asked in his homily in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 29.

Speaking from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square June 28, the pope reflected on the day’s Gospel reading, in which Jesus tells his disciples: “Whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:28).
