Humility is the epitome of redemption, Pope says on Palm Sunday

Vatican City, Mar 20, 2016 / 05:28 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Palm Sunday Pope Francis said the path toward salvation can be summed up by humility and service, and encouraged pilgrims to contemplate Jesus’ shameful Passion and Death throughout Holy Week.

“Today’s liturgy teaches us that the Lord has not saved us by his triumphal entry or by means of powerful miracles,” the Pope said March 20.

Pope's Instagram launches with appeal for prayer

Vatican City, Mar 19, 2016 / 03:49 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The official Instagram account of Pope Francis launched on Saturday with a simple request for his followers: “Pray for me.”

The inaugural post, which was translated into nine languages, features a photo of the Pope reverently kneeling in prayer.

The post was made after noon under the handle @Franciscus – which is Latin for Francis. Within 30 minutes of going live, the account had more than ten thousand followers.

Vatican City, Mar 18, 2016 / 01:45 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis told members of the Neocatechumenal Way that they have received a great charism to maintain. On Friday he spoke with them about Church unity, how to engage the world, and the difference between worldly and divine glory.

“You have accepted the call to evangelize: I bless the Lord for this, for the gift of the Way and for the gift of each of you,” he said March 18 at the Vatican's Paul VI hall.

It's official – Mother Teresa will be canonized September 4

Vatican City, Mar 15, 2016 / 03:57 am (CNA/EWTN News).- After months of anticipation, the date of Mother Teresa’s canonization has finally been announced. It falls on Sept. 4, which this year will also mark a special jubilee for workers and volunteers of mercy.

Though it's been rumored for months that Mother Teresa’s canonization will take place Sept. 4, the Vatican made the date official during a March 15 consistory of cardinals.

Priest admits to relaying confidential documents in 'Vatileaks' trial

Vatican City, Mar 14, 2016 / 05:37 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- During a Vatican City trial on Monday over a case in which five individuals are accused of leaking and disseminating confidential financial documents, a former Vatican official said he relayed documents only under duress.

“Yes, I passed documents,” Msgr. Lucio Angel Vallejo Balda, a former secretary of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs, told Vatican prosecutors March 14. “I was convinced I was in a situation without exit.”

“Three days ago a homeless person died here, on the street,” the Pope said, according to Vatican Radio's translation: “he died of cold.”
