The world needs Christ more than ever, Pope Francis says

Vatican City, Jun 19, 2016 / 05:12 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Sunday Pope Francis said that with a growing sense of emptiness and insecurity gripping the world, Jesus Christ is needed more than ever before, since he alone knows how to answer humanity’s deepest questions.

“The world needs Christ more than ever, needs his salvation and his merciful love,” the Pope said June 19.

For Pope Francis, the Catholic laity can transform the world

Vatican City, Jun 18, 2016 / 06:04 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Church should always value the transformative power of faith-filled laity who are willing to serve the Gospel, Pope Francis said Friday.

“We need well-formed lay people, animated by a sincere and clear faith, whose life has been touched by the personal and merciful love of Christ Jesus,” the Pope told a plenary assembly of the Pontifical Council for the Laity June 17.

You are 'artisans of wonder,' Pope Francis tells performers

Vatican City, Jun 16, 2016 / 10:14 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis told a group of nearly 6,000 traveling performers that while their work is demanding and at times unstable, it gives them the ability to bring light to what is an often dark world.

“You are artisans of celebration, of wonder, of the beautiful: with these qualities you enrich the society of the entire world,” the Pope said June 16.

They died for the faith: 115 Spanish Catholics recognized as martyrs

Vatican City, Jun 15, 2016 / 12:35 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis has officially recognized 115 Catholics who were killed during the Spanish Civil War out of hatred of the faith.

The newest martyrs are Servants of God José Álvarez Benavides y de la Torre, Spanish dean of the Cathedral Chapter of Almería, and his 114 companions. They were killed between 1936 and 1938 during Spain’s brutal civil war.
