Pope Francis says he welcomes constructive criticism

Vatican City, Sep 10, 2019 / 01:24 pm (CNA).- Speaking aboard the papal plane from Madagascar to Rome Tuesday, Pope Francis said he welcomes criticism if it is given openly, fairly, and with a willingness to be debated.

“Of criticisms, I always see the advantages. Sometimes you get angry, but the advantages are there,” he said Sept. 10 during an in-flight press conference.

“A fair criticism is always well received, at least by me.”

Vatican City, Sep 4, 2019 / 05:45 pm (CNA).- Two cardinals have sent letters to fellow members of the College of Cardinals, raising concerns about the working document for an upcoming synod of bishops on the pan-Amazonian region.

“Some points of the synod’s Instrumentum laboris seem not only in dissonance with respect to the authentic teaching of the Church, but even contrary to it,” Cardinal Walter Brandmüller wrote to fellow cardinals in an Aug. 28 letter obtained by CNA.

Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who oversaw the Jubilee Year 2000, dies at 96

Vatican City, Sep 4, 2019 / 03:00 pm (CNA).- French Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, a frequent collaborator of Pope St. John Paul II, has died at 96.

Etchagaray, from the French Basque region, was born in Espelette on September 25, 1922.

He attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, obtaining licentiate in theology and a doctorate of canon law.

He was ordained a priest in 1947 and incardinated in the Diocese of Bayonne.

Pope Francis arrives in Mozambique for 3-nation trip

Maputo, Mozambique, Sep 4, 2019 / 12:33 pm (CNA).- Pope Francis arrived in Maputo, Mozambique on Wednesday, kicking off a Sept. 4-10 trip to sub-Saharan Africa. The pope was greeted by government officials at a welcoming ceremony, with singing crowds lining the streets.

On the nearly 11-hour flight to Africa, Pope Francis offered prayers for victims of Hurricane Dorian, which tore through the Bahamas this week, causing widespread devastation.

Love for neighbor includes care for the planet, Vatican official says

Vatican City, Sep 3, 2019 / 02:53 pm (CNA).- Taking care of the planet is ultimately about justice for the poor and about loving one’s neighbor as one’s self, a Vatican official has told CNA.

Fr. Joshtrom Kureethadam told CNA Sept. 3 that “we need to care for creation because poor people are all being affected by [changes in climate].”

Pope Francis accepts resignation of Sartain of Seattle for medical reasons

Vatican City, Sep 3, 2019 / 04:41 am (CNA).- Pope Francis Tuesday accepted the resignation of Archbishop J. Peter Sartain of Seattle, who will be succeeded by Archbishop Paul D. Etienne, coadjutor of the archdiocese since June.

A coadjutor bishop is appointed to assist in the administration of a diocese and succeeds the bishop upon his retirement or death.
