Pope names new archbishops in Peru, Mexico

Vatican City, Jan 25, 2019 / 07:42 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis Friday appointed the next archbishops of two metropolitan sees – Fr. Carlos Castillo Mattasoglio was named to Lima, Peru and Archbishop Jose Antonio Fernandez Hurtado to Tlalnepantla, Mexico.

In Lima, Castillo will replace Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, whose resignation was accepted Jan. 25 after he reached 75, the ordinary age of retirement for clergy, at the end of December.

Pope Francis says Panama to be 'a hub of hope' during World Youth Day

Panama City, Panama, Jan 24, 2019 / 08:55 am (CNA).- Upon arriving in Panama for World Youth Day 2019, Pope Francis met with politicians, diplomats and civil society leaders, extending a message of hope for “a more humane world.”

“In these days, Panama … will turn into a hub of hope,” Pope Francis told leaders gathered outside Panama City’s Bolivar Palace Jan. 24.

Pope Francis warns against 'spirals of hatred' on social media

Vatican City, Jan 24, 2019 / 04:26 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis warned Thursday against the increasing narcissism and “spirals of hatred” found on today’s social media networks, encouraging people to cultivate community through their internet interactions instead.

In his World Day of Social Communications message, Pope Francis said that online discussion is “too often based on opposition to the other.”

On anniversary, Swiss Guards don new 3D-printed helmets

Vatican City, Jan 22, 2019 / 11:04 am (CNA).- As the Swiss Guards celebrated their 513th anniversary Tuesday, they donned for the first time their new light-weight helmets, which are made of black PVC and 3D printed.

The plastic helmets replace those made of metal, which were easily dented, and which would get so hot from the Roman sun in the summer months they could cause blisters on the guards’ ears.

Pope’s app 'Click to Pray' connects Catholics to a smartphone prayer network

Vatican City, Jan 20, 2019 / 06:46 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis launched an app Sunday called  “Click to Pray,” which connects Catholics to a global network to share prayer intentions via their smartphones.

The pope opened the new app using an iPad during his Angelus address Jan. 20 and encouraged young Catholics, in particular, to download the smartphone app to pray the “Rosary of Peace” ahead of World Youth Day.
