Vatican City, Sep 27, 2019 / 01:03 pm (CNA).- The leader of the largest independent Muslim organization in the world met Pope Francis this week to present his vision for a more peaceful future and greater human fraternity.

Sheikh Yahya Cholil Staquf leads the 50 million member Nahdlatul Ulama movement, which calls for a reformed “humanitarian Islam” and has developed a theological framework for Islam that rejects the concepts of caliphate, Sharia law, and “kafir” (infidels).

He was the first American to lead the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), one of the most senior positions in the Curia. 

Vatican City, Sep 25, 2019 / 05:30 am (CNA).- Pope Francis said Wednesday that slander is a 'diabolical cancer' that seriously damages the Church.

“We know that slander always kills. This 'diabolical cancer,' which arises from the desire to destroy a person's reputation, also attacks the rest of the ecclesial body,” Pope Francis said Sept. 25 in his general audience in St. Peter’s Square.

Vatican City, Sep 23, 2019 / 10:59 am (CNA).- Pope Francis told an association of Italian Catholic news agencies Monday to stay close to the Magisterium and to use their work to distinguish what is good from what is evil.

“To renew your harmony with the magisterium of the Church, I urge you to be a voice of conscience, of a journalism capable of distinguishing good from evil, human choices from inhuman ones,” he said Sept. 23.
