Pope, Austrian Chancellor discuss migration, nuclear disarmament

Vatican City, Mar 5, 2018 / 07:32 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Monday Pope Francis and Europe's youngest political leader met at the Vatican, where they discussed an array of issues including migration, nuclear disarmament and the need to promote peace and solidarity.

Sebastian Kurz, 31, is the Chancellor of Austria and is currently the youngest European leader in office. Prior to his December 2017 election to the position, he served as the nation's Foreign Minister.

Pope praises work of nurses, recalls the one who saved his life

Vatican City, Mar 3, 2018 / 01:09 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Speaking to a group of nurses on Saturday, Pope Francis thanked them for their valuable work and paid a tribute to the Dominican nun who saved his life when he was a young man.

“[She was] a good woman, even brave, to the point of arguing with the doctors. Humble, but sure of what she was doing,” he said March 3.

Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church added to liturgical calendar

Vatican City, Mar 3, 2018 / 06:08 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Saturday, the Vatican announced Pope Francis’ decision that the Church celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as “Mother of the Church” every year on the Monday after Pentecost, as a way to foster Marian piety and the maternal sense of the Church.

The decree establishing the memorial was published March 3 in a letter from Cardinal Robert Sarah, head of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Cardinal Koch: Geneva visit a sign of Pope's emphasis on ecumenism

Speaking to journalists about the trip March 2, Cardinal Kurt Koch said “the pope has a very ecumenical heart. Ecumenism, the unity of Christians, is very much in the Holy Father's heart.”

Holy See to be 'hacked' by first Vatican hackathon    

Vatican City, Mar 2, 2018 / 01:00 pm (CNA).- A “hackathon” is a hacking marathon: a collaborative computer programming event in which a group works under a tight deadline to find software or programing approaches to real-world problems.

On March 8-11, the Vatican will host its first hackathon, VHacks. 120 young adult programmers, graphic designers, project managers, and others from around the world will spend 36 hours “hacking” together over the course of three days.
