Pope Francis appoints Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski to lead St. Louis

Vatican City, Jun 10, 2020 / 05:15 am (CNA).- Pope Francis appointed Wednesday Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski to lead the Metropolitan Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Rozanski, 61, is the current Bishop of Springfield, Massachusetts, where he has served since 2014. He succeeds Archbishop Robert Carlson, who presented his resignation to Pope Francis at the age of 75.

Vatican should renew China deal for ‘one or two years,’ says negotiator

Vatican City, Jun 9, 2020 / 07:30 am (CNA).- With the Vatican’s interim deal with the Chinese government due to expire in September, an archbishop who helped to negotiate the agreement said this week that he believes it should be renewed for one or two more years.

Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli was instrumental in the negotiation and signing of the 2018 agreement between the Holy See and China that regularized the country’s government-appointed bishops who had been out of communion with Rome. 

Pope Francis appoints new bishop of Beaumont, Texas

Vatican City, Jun 9, 2020 / 06:00 am (CNA).- Pope Francis appointed Msgr. David L. Toups as the next Bishop of Beaumont, Texas, Tuesday.

The Holy See press office announced June 9 that Toups would succeed Bishop Curtis J. Guillory, 76, who has led the diocese since the year 2000. 

Toups, 49, currently serves as rector of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boyton Beach, Florida. 

Vatican bank reports €38 million profit in 2019

Vatican City, Jun 8, 2020 / 11:30 am (CNA).- The Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), commonly called the Vatican Bank, said it had made a net profit of 38 million euros in 2019 as it released its annual report Monday.

According to the report, the IOR recorded a net profit more than double that of the 17.5 million euros it reported in 2018. This could be due to the boom in global markets in 2019, a year in which the S&P 500 grew by more than 28%. 

Pope Francis teams up with Olympic athletes for coronavirus charity auction

Vatican City, Jun 8, 2020 / 07:30 am (CNA).- Pope Francis has teamed up with Olympic athletes for a charity auction this month to support hospitals in the regions of Italy hardest hit by the coronavirus.

Three-time world champion cyclist Peter Sagan donated a custom racing bike with the Vatican crest and colors for the pope’s fundraiser, and 2018 Olympic gold medalist Sofia Goggia autographed ski racing boots.
