Vatican City, Dec 11, 2015 / 03:40 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Attention to the poor was one of the greatest of the bishops' contributions during the Second Vatican Council – and is a legacy Pope Francis carries forward with impressive force, according to some.

“A true legacy of the Second Vatican Council is being fulfilled in the person and pontificate of Pope Francis,” Father Paulo Anto Pulikkan told CNA Dec. 11.

The new annulment process went into effect this week

Vatican City, Dec 10, 2015 / 03:33 pm (CNA).- With the launch of the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis’ reforms to the annulment process have gone into effect, giving more of a role to the local bishop, dropping automatic appeals, and ensuring that the process is free of charge.

 

The new process is aimed at streamlining the system for granting annulments out of concern “for the salvation of souls” while affirming the longstanding Catholic teaching on marriage indissolubility.

Vatican City, Dec 9, 2015 / 11:18 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The day after opening the Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis dedicated his general audience remarks to answering the question of why he called for a jubilee on the subject, saying the primary reason is simply because it’s needed.

 

“Why a Jubilee of Mercy? What does this mean?” the Pope asked pilgrims present in St. Peter’s Square Dec. 9 for his weekly general audience. 

 

Saint Peter's Basilica used in art display promoting beauty of nature

Vatican City, Dec 8, 2015 / 09:06 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- On Tuesday the façade and dome of St. Peter’s Basilica were illuminated with images portraying man’s relation to nature – an event inspired by Pope Francis’ recent encyclical on care for our common home and set to coincide with major Church events.

Titled “Fiat Lux (Let there be light): Illuminating Our Common Home,” the three-hour display took place the evening of Dec. 8, which marked a major day for the Church.

“This Extraordinary Holy Year is itself a gift of grace,” Pope Francis said in his homily for Mass, just before opening the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica.

“It was easy in the old days to know who your enemy was. Everybody just called it 'the man' – 'the man' didn't want you to advance. But now it's not that simple,” said Helen Alvaré, law professor at George Mason University and participant in the two-day workshop.

Vatican City, Dec 7, 2015 / 05:09 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- As a Vatican City trial over the leaking of private documents continues, the director of the Holy See Press Office has defended the trial and the judicial systems of the Vatican City State after the defendants criticized the process.
 
Father Federico Lombardi’s message, published Dec. 7, follows a hearing in the trial. The tribunal heard motions by the lawyers and discussed the approval of witnesses for the defense.
