Catholic bishop in Mozambique hotspot transferred to Brazilian diocese

Vatican City, Feb 12, 2021 / 08:00 am (CNA).- Pope Francis on Thursday appointed a Catholic bishop serving in a strife-torn diocese in Mozambique to lead a diocese in his native Brazil.

The pope named Bishop Luiz Fernando Lisboa, who has overseen the Diocese of Pemba since 2013, to guide the Diocese of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim in the Southeast Region of Brazil.

Pope Francis: ‘Experience Lent with love’ by caring for those affected by pandemic

In his message for Lent 2021, the pope asks people to “experience Lent with love,” which “rejoices in seeing others grow.”

Pope Francis presented with historic prayer manuscript saved from Islamic State

Vatican City, Feb 10, 2021 / 01:00 pm (CNA).- Pope Francis was presented on Wednesday with a historic Aramaic prayer manuscript rescued from the Islamic State’s destructive occupation of northern Iraq.

Dating back to sometime between the 14th and 15th century, the book contains liturgical prayers in Aramaic for the season of Easter in the Syriac tradition.

Accused priest asserts innocence at Vatican seminary abuse hearing

Vatican City, Feb 10, 2021 / 11:00 am (CNA).- At a hearing on Wednesday in a trial for alleged abuse and cover-up at a Vatican youth seminary, a defendant asserted his innocence, imputing abuse accusations to jealousy and divisions within the institution.

“These are unfounded accusations,” Fr. Gabriele Martinelli said during two hours of questioning in a Vatican courtroom on Feb. 10.

Vatican ‘security consultant’ Cecilia Marogna lodges complaint over confiscated cellphone

Vatican City, Feb 10, 2021 / 07:00 am (CNA).- Cecilia Marogna, an Italian woman expected to face trial at the Vatican on charges of embezzlement, has lodged an appeal with a Milan court over the confiscation of her cellphone.

According to Italian media reports, Marogna appealed to the Court of Review of Milan on Feb. 9 against the seizure of her cellphone as part of a Vatican investigation against her.

Pope Francis: Christian prayer instills ‘invincible hope’ in the human heart

Vatican City, Feb 10, 2021 / 04:30 am (CNA).- Pope Francis said on Wednesday that prayer can fortify us as we face the challenges of daily life.

Speaking at his general audience on Feb. 10, the pope explained that prayer helps us to see the “infinite grace” that lies beyond the visible world. 

“And thus, Christian prayer instills an invincible hope in the human heart: whatever experience we touch on our journey, God’s love can turn it into good,” he said.

Pope Francis asks people to pray for every victim of human trafficking

Vatican City, Feb 8, 2021 / 08:30 am (CNA).- Pope Francis has asked people to pray Monday for every person who is currently a victim of human trafficking.

“In times of crisis, human trafficking proliferates; therefore, an economy needs to be strengthened so that it may respond to the crisis in a way that is not short-sighted, in a lasting way, in a solid way,” Pope Francis said in the video message published Feb. 8.
