Gingrich officially begins term as new US ambassador to Vatican

Vatican City, Dec 22, 2017 / 05:00 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Newly-appointed American Ambassador to the Holy See, Callista Gingrich, presented her letters of credential to Pope Francis in a meeting Friday morning, officially marking the beginning of her duties.

U.S. President Donald Trump nominated Gingrich to serve as the 11th ambassador to the Vatican in May, and she was approved Oct. 16 by the U.S. Senate, in a vote 70-23.

We all need God’s mercy, cardinal says at Law’s funeral

Rome, Italy, Dec 21, 2017 / 12:00 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- At the funeral of Cardinal Bernard Law on Thursday, Cardinal Angelo Sodano said that every one of us is imperfect, but that we must give ourselves over to the loving mercy of God the Father.

Cardinal Sodano, who is dean of the College of Cardinals, presided over the Dec. 21 funeral Mass of Cardinal Bernard Law, the former archbishop of Boston, who died Dec. 20 after a hospitalization for congenital heart failure.

“It is not a good habit to look and the clock and say: ‘I am in time, I will arrive after the sermon and with this fulfill the commandment,’” the Pope said Dec. 20.

“The joy of children is a treasure,” he said Dec. 17. “And we ought to do everything so that they continue to be joyous.”

“Saint Paul invites us to prepare for the coming of the Lord by assuming three attitudes: constant joy, persevering prayer and continual thanksgiving,” the Pope said. “Joy, prayer and gratitude are three attitudes that prepare us to live Christmas in an authentic way.”
