Pope Francis lights candle for children in Syria

Vatican City, Dec 2, 2018 / 05:50 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis Sunday lit a candle, a symbol of hope, to pray for the children affected by violence and war in Syria and across the Middle East.

“Advent is a time of hope. At this moment I would like to make the hope for peace of the children of Syria, beloved Syria, mine,” the pope prayed on Dec. 2, the first Sunday of Advent.

Vatican City, Dec 1, 2018 / 09:38 am (CNA/EWTN News).- As the Advent season begins, it is a good time to reflect on the Christian call to joyful expectancy, finding hope and consolation in waiting for Christ, Pope Francis said Saturday.

“We Christians are called to safeguard and spread the joy of waiting: we await God who loves us infinitely and at the same time we are awaited by Him. In this way, life becomes a great betrothal,” the pope said Dec. 1.

Vatican official: There is a clear link between Amazon synod, missionary month

Vatican City, Nov 30, 2018 / 10:32 am (CNA/EWTN News).- According to the president of the Pontifical Mission Societies, there is a clear link between next October’s focus on missionary work and the synod on the Amazon that makes the convergence of the two events fortuitous.

Pope Francis “underlined this connection between the Extraordinary Missionary Month and the synod for the Amazon,” Archbishop Giampietro Dal Toso told EWTN Friday. “This connection is not a casual one.”

Shrines are places of God's mercy, Pope Francis says

Vatican City, Nov 29, 2018 / 09:55 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Shrines and sanctuaries should be places of welcoming and mercy where the sacraments can be received, Pope Francis said Thursday to an international gathering of shrine rectors and pastoral workers.

“The shrine,” the pope said Nov. 29 in the Vatican's Sala Regia, “is a privileged place to experience mercy that knows no boundaries.”
