Archbishop Cupich appointed to Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops

Vatican City, Jul 7, 2016 / 06:43 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Thursday the Vatican announced Pope Francis’ decision to nominate Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago as a new member of the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops.

The Pope’s appointment of Archbishop Cupich to the Vatican department was announced in a July 7 communique from the Vatican.

Respect indigenous cultures, traditions, Pope asks in new prayer video

Vatican City, Jul 7, 2016 / 12:08 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis has dedicated the month of July to praying for the world’s indigenous peoples, asking specifically in his new prayer video that their identity and cultural traditions be respected.

“I want to be a spokesman for the deepest longings of indigenous peoples,” the Pope said in the video, released July 6.

Saint Maria Goretti calls us to be 'witnesses of forgiveness'

Vatican City, Jul 6, 2016 / 06:01 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis has marked the feast of the young martyr St. Maria Goretti by calling the faithful to follow her example and be forgiving to those who wrong them.

The memory of Maria Goretti's example should “encourage you to commit yourselves, like the Saint you venerate, to being witnesses of forgiveness,” the Pope wrote in a letter for the July 6 feast of the  Italian who is known for having forgiven her attacker.

Pope Francis meets with parents of American student killed in Rome

Vatican City, Jul 6, 2016 / 03:50 am (CNA/EWTN News).- After the tragic death of Beau Solomon in Rome late last week, Pope Francis met with the young student’s parents, who traveled to the city once they heard that their son was missing.

“This morning…around 9a.m. the Pope met with the parents of Beau Solomon, the young American student found dead in the Tiber during the past few days,” a July 6 communique from the Holy See Press Office read.

Pope to world leaders: if you want to help Syrians, stop funding the war

Vatican City, Jul 5, 2016 / 04:34 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In his message for a new campaign promoting peace in Syria, Pope Francis called out world leaders who speak of ending the conflict, but at the same time fund the war through the sale of arms.

“While the people suffer, incredible quantities of money are being spent to supply weapons to fighters,” the Pope said in his video message, published July 5.  

Pope Francis says Mother Angelica was 'a holy woman'

Vatican City, Jul 3, 2016 / 06:01 am (CNA/EWTN News).- After speaking to Catholic News Agency about how he recently helped his elderly mother to meet Pope Francis, Msgr. Anthony Figueiredo was able to show the Pope himself a few clips of the interview.

Francis’ response after seeing the video? “He was visibly happy and asked who did it,” Msgr. Figueiredo told CNA July 2, adding that when he told the Pope it was EWTN, Francis immediately replied, “Mother Angelica. A holy woman.”

Pope prays for victims of recent attacks in Baghdad and Dhaka

Vatican City, Jul 3, 2016 / 04:38 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Sunday, Pope Francis remembered the victims of attacks in Iraq and Bangladesh over the weekend, and prayed for the conversion of persons “blinded by hate” who commit such acts of violence.

“I express my closeness to the families of the victims and the wounded in yesterday's attack in Dhaka, and also of that which took place in Baghdad,” the Pope said during his weekly post-Angelus in St. Peter's Square.
