Pope pays surprise visit to Earth Day celebration

Rome, Italy, Apr 24, 2016 / 04:10 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis encouraged Christians to courageously venture into the metaphorical deserts of the world during a surprise visit to an Earth Day celebration in Rome Sunday.

“There are so many deserts in the cities, in the lives of people who have no future, because there are…always prejudices and fears,” the Pope said in off-the-cuff remarks.

Pope urges teens to practice works of mercy

Rome, Italy, Apr 23, 2016 / 05:07 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis has challenged young people to commit to practicing the corporal works of mercy in order to recognize the face of Jesus in each other.

“As you know, the works of mercy are simple gestures, which belong to the life of every day, allowing you to recognize the face of Jesus in many persons. Even young people!” the Pope said in a video message to a youth rally at Rome’s Olympic Stadium.

After Prince’s death, Vatican praise for his rare gift of music

Vatican City, Apr 22, 2016 / 04:10 pm (CNA).- The death of the songwriter, singer and music producer Prince drew reactions from the Vatican and praise for his musical talent.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, sent a tweet quoting the artist’s song “Sometimes It Snows In April:”

“Sometimes, sometimes I wish that life was never ending / All good things they say, never last.”

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 90th birthday April 21 by unveiling a special plaque on Windsor's Queen's Walkway before lighting the first in a series of beacons marking the special day. Official gun salutes could be heard throughout the U.K.

Know the difference between sin and sinner, Pope Francis says

Vatican City, Apr 20, 2016 / 05:44 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Wednesday Pope Francis stressed the importance of knowing how to distinguish between sin and sinner, adding that God’s mercy is not afraid to reach out and touch our sins in order to forgive them.

“The Word of God teaches us to distinguish between the sin and the sinner,” the Pope said April 20, noting that when it comes to sin, there are no “compromises.”
