Venezuelan Fr. Arturo Sosa elected as new head of Jesuit order

Vatican City, Oct 14, 2016 / 05:01 am (CNA/EWTN News).- After several weeks of discussion and discernment, the Jesuit order has elected Fr. Arturo Sosa as their new Superior General, who will be taking over after the resignation of their former leader, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás.

Former head of the Venezuelan Jesuit province, Fr. Sosa entered the Society of Jesus in 1966 and was ordained a priest in 1977.

All Christians must follow Jesus closely, Pope Francis tells Lutherans

Vatican City, Oct 13, 2016 / 10:42 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Thursday, asked about what he likes and doesn’t like in the Lutheran ecclesial community, Pope Francis said he likes Lutherans who are active followers of Christ, while he dislikes Christians who are hypocritical or who have a lukewarm faith.

“I like all the good Lutherans, eh?” he said. “There are many good ones, the Lutherans who really follow Jesus Christ. On the other hand, I don’t like lukewarm Catholics or lukewarm Lutherans.”

When it comes to migration, children are the first to suffer, Pope says

Vatican City, Oct 13, 2016 / 05:49 am (CNA/EWTN News).- As images of children crushed by bombs or washed up at sea are becoming an increasingly daily sight, Pope Francis’ decision to focus his message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees on child migrants rings in as particularly timely and appropriate.

“I feel compelled to draw attention to the reality of child migrants, especially the ones who are alone,” Francis said in his message.

Cardinal Parolin visits Fatima ahead of Pope's trip

Vatican City, Oct 12, 2016 / 09:49 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, is traveling to Fatima, Portugal ahead of Pope Francis’ own visit, which will take place next year for the 100-year anniversary of Mary’s appearance there.

Cardinal Parolin’s Oct. 11-13 visit occurs seven months before the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13, the anniversary of her first appearance.

Pope pleads for ceasefire amid 'inhuman conflict' in Syria

Vatican City, Oct 12, 2016 / 04:36 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Wednesday Pope Francis begged for an end to the terrible conflict in Syria, asking for an immediate ceasefire to allow the evacuation of civilians, especially children.

“I want to emphasize and reiterate my closeness to all victims of the inhuman conflict in Syria. With a sense of urgency I renew my appeal, pleading, with all my strength,” the Pope said at the end of his general audience Oct. 12.
